Mistletoe in Medicine - introduction

Mistletoes, being very unusual and distinctive plants, have always attracted the attention of herbalists. They have a very long (probably prehistoric) association with human and animal medicine.

Many differing mistletoe species are involved around the world - but the notes on this website largely refer to European Mistletoe, Viscum album. (See the caveats page for advice on other species)

European mistletoe has added 'herbal' attraction because of its unusual branching pattern and white berries

Whilst its long history in medicine may not be unexpected, many people are surprised to learn that it is still widely used in some areas - and may yet have an important role as an anti-cancer agent.

These pages are largely about the medicinal attributes of Viscum album. Do not confuse European Mistletoe's medical attributes with American Phoradendron species - these have very different properties and can be very toxic.

An important note about these medicine pages:

This site makes no claim to give expert medical opinion - and merely outlines past and present thinking on mistletoe in medicine.

(New material will be added in November and December 2009 to reflect recent developments - some of this may also be covered in the mistletoe blog.)

At present there are sections outlining herbal use (mistletoe tea is very popular in Europe), anthroposophic remedies (Rudolf Steiner was a mistletoe fan) and conventional medicine.

The last section gives some advice on where to find out more, how to buy some mistletoe medicine products, and links to books and sites to help you make your own mind up about mistletoe's medical properties.
